How to Set Up Your Business Card Artwork
Follow these simple rules and your business cards will print sharp, true to colour and trim cleanly. Not sure your file is right? Send it anyway, every order includes a free artwork check.
85 × 55mm plus bleed
Set the finished size to 85 × 55mm and add 3mm bleed on every edge, so the document is 91 × 61mm. Download the template
300dpi at actual size
Use images at around 300dpi at the size they print, about 1075 × 720 pixels including bleed.
CMYK and outlined fonts
Set artwork to CMYK and embed or outline your fonts. Keep text and logos safely inside the trim.
Foil or spot UV?
Supply the finish area as a separate vector layer so we know exactly where the effect goes. Not sure how? We will advise.
Bleed, trim and safe area
- Bleed, 3mm. Extend background colour and images past the edge.
- Trim line. Where your card is cut to 85 × 55mm.
- Safe area, 5mm. Keep text and logos inside this line.
AI designs look great on screen, but are rarely print ready
We see more and more business cards created with AI tools. They often look fantastic, but they usually come out at the wrong size and shape, at screen resolution, in RGB and with no bleed, so text and edges print soft or get trimmed off.
- Wrong size. Usually square or a screen ratio, not 85 × 55mm.
- Low resolution. Typically 72dpi, which prints blurry.
- No bleed or safe area. Edges and text risk being cut off.

Can I get business cards printed today?
Yes. Same day production is available Monday to Friday on selected quantities of 400gsm Mayfair Ivory or uncoated, when your order and approved artwork are received by 2pm.
What business card stocks do you offer?
Our main stocks are 400gsm Mayfair Ivory, 400gsm uncoated and 400gsm silk. Uncoated stocks are easy to write on, while silk is used for our laminated cards.
Can business cards be laminated?
Yes. Our 400gsm silk cards can be matt, gloss or soft touch laminated. Matt is understated, gloss is shinier and soft touch has a velvety, premium feel.
Do you print foil and spot UV business cards?
Yes. Metallic foil and spot UV can be applied to logos, names or details on selected specifications. They are produced to order and need extra production time, and the finish area should be supplied as a separate vector layer.
I designed my business card with AI. Can you print it?
Often not as it is. AI tools usually create designs at the wrong size, at low screen resolution, in RGB and without bleed, so they can print blurry or get trimmed. Send it to us and our design team can rebuild it as print ready artwork. Design work is quoted separately.
How much bleed do business cards need?
Add 3mm bleed on every edge where colour runs to the trim, making the document 91 × 61mm for a standard card. See our business card bleed guide.
What file should I send for business card printing?
A print ready PDF is preferred, with fonts embedded or outlined and images at 300dpi. PDF/X 1a or PDF/X 4 files work well, and AI or EPS files can be supplied where needed.
Can I use Canva to design my business cards?
Yes. Set the design to 85 × 55mm, extend backgrounds into the bleed and download as PDF Print with crop marks and bleed. Or share the design with sales@printpallondon.co.uk and we will check it.
